Tour Details:

Day 1: The Artist’s Press and the Graskop Art Hotel

You will be met by a local Lithographer and Printer who spends time preparing limited edition works to be printed. As part of the visit, you will also have the chance to visit the Panorama Route.

Accommodation will be at The Graskop Hotel, an Art Hotel where each room has a work of art, installed by some of South Africa’s best-known artists who have left their distinctive personal “fingerprints” and philosophies in the form of chandeliers made of mattresses, wall coverings made of plastic hangers, rear-view mirrors at the dressing table and more… a seriously strenuous sensory workout.

Day 2: Chissano Museum, Sagrada Familia Church and Maputo Railway Station

The Chissano Gallery is a fundamental introduction to art in Mozambique. The spirit of Mozambique’s armed struggle is ever-present in the totem-pole-like carvings skinny, desperate humans crushed under the clumsy, uncaring feet of fat figures perched victoriously on top. The Sagrada Familia Church is Mozambique’s gem of the 50s, a fine example of Pancho Guedes’ unique architectural style. It is shaped like a ship’s hull, replacing the dragons with crosses and then repeating the motif of the Latin cross throughout. This is a perfect example of the Portuguese Art Deco architecture

Maputo Railway Station was constructed between 1910 and 1916 in the Beaux-Arts style. Widely recognized for its attractiveness. The station has been ranked by international publications as one of the world’s most beautiful station. In addition to serving as an active train terminus, the station contains a rail museum, food venues space music events.

Day 3: More of Pancho Guedes and other Portuguese Art Deco Buildings

• ·   The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception: This cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The foundation stone for the construction of the Church was laid on June 28, 1936, and is located inside the narthex and inscribed by the Bishop of Mozambique and Cape Verde, D. Rafael Maria da Asunção. Construction on the cathedral was completed in 1944.

•      Saaint Anthony Catholic Church: This Franciscan church, an emblematic building of modernist architecture, was designed by the Portuguese architect Nuno Cavreiro Lopes. The Church of Saint Anthony of Polana was built in 1962 and restored in 1992. The building has the shape of an inverted flower and is popularly known as the “lemon squeezer”. In the dome of the building, of concrete and with conical shape, windows with colourful crystals also allow the entrance of light. 
• Fortress of Maputo: This is Mozambique’s national monument that depicts moments of Portuguese colonial occupation and how local people resisted it. Old Portuguese weapons are on display.
• Núcleo de Arte: This is an Artists cooperative in the heart of Maputo city. Frequent exhibitions featuring the work of up-and-coming artists (some of which are for sale). Other works that you can appreciate include pottery by Mozambique’s Reinate Samdimba and paintings by Valente Malangatana. There is also a garden where you can talk with the artists and watch them at work. We will also drive past Pancho Guedes’ Escola Yoxani, Edifício Dragao and Edifício Abreu Santos e Rocha. Other buildings by well-known Portuguese architects will include Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano, the Town Hall, Radio Mozambique, the Iron House and others as we drive back to Nelspruit.
